The Value of Data Centers
BACKGROUND
Data centers are a critical part of our region’s digital infrastructure, supporting everything from cloud computing and e-commerce to health care and public safety. In Chelan and Douglas Counties, data centers bring high-paying jobs, significant capital investment, and essential tax revenue that helps fund local schools and public services. As demand for digital services continues to grow, our area’s abundant clean energy, strong infrastructure, and business-friendly environment make it an ideal location for sustainable data center development. Investing in Infrastructure for a Stronger Community: The Malaga Cooling Water Facility
The Malaga Cooling Water Facility stands as a prime example of the power of public-private partnerships to drive meaningful, long-term community development. In collaboration with Microsoft, the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority played a key role by purchasing the land and leading the development of the project, which was fully funded through Microsoft’s investment.
While the facility supports the cooling needs of Microsoft's data center operations, its broader impact reaches well beyond a single project. The infrastructure created through this investment opens the door for Malaga to pursue sustainable residential growth and expand public utilities—an opportunity that would have been difficult, if not impossible, without this foundational work.
As part of this project, the Port will retain 24.6 acres of land for future industrial development, ensuring that the benefits of this partnership continue to serve the region’s economic goals for years to come. This initiative exemplifies how strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors can lay the groundwork for vibrant, inclusive, and resilient communities.
